Canaan B&M Freight shed

Depot Street, Canaan, NH

When downtown canaan burned in 1923…

…the railroad depot and freight shed were among the first buildings rebuilt. This Colonial Revival freight shed was shipped up from Boston in pieces (the interior lumber has the stamps!).

MVP is working with the Town of Canaan to make the building, which was listed to the NH Preservation Alliance’s Seven to Save list in 2017, structurally sound and watertight.

In 2020 and 2021, MVP volunteers and the Town of Canaan cleared the trees and vegetation from the perimeter. In 2021-22, the slate roof was patched and repaired thanks to a Moose Plate grant from the Division of Historical Resources.

MVP received more Moose Plate funding to replace the rotted sills — work that was completed in spring 2023.
