A FAMILY LEGACY

I remember the peace I felt every time I went to my great-grandmother’s home by the river. How I loved hearing the birds sing and the river tumbling over the rocks behind her house. I loved sitting on the front porch and feeling totally at peace in the quiet of nature.
— Margaret Kimball Long

The children of Stanley Kimball, a Graftonite who graduated salutatorian from Canaan High School and later became an osteopathic physician, donated this 175-acre parcel with three old buildings to Mascoma Valley Preservation.

For Stanley’s children, it’s about honoring their father’s memory, whose ancestors were prominent citizens in town. The site also holds many fond memories. Archie Kimball, Stanley’s father, operated the sawmill on site and Tamar, Stanley’s grandmother, lived in the red house.

This generous gift preserves the buildings and conserves important forestland and stream frontage in East Grafton. MVP seeks to restore the buildings and find sympathetic uses that respect the intentions of the Kimball Family, forge a connection between preservation and conservation, and revitalize East Grafton.
